Oracle of Ages has pretty simplistic controls, and should be easy enough to figure out on your own. However, they are some shortcuts you can use to speed things up a bit. Below are the list of controls and what they are used for, as well as some tips.

Items: You use the A button to equip and use items. On the start screen, press A while highlighting an item to equip it. Press A in
actual gameplay to use it. (You cannot use secondary items)
Talking: The Citizens of Labrynna have loads of information, and can give you a hint on where you need to go next. If you walk up to
someone and press A, you can engage in a short conversation with them. Press A again during the conversation to exit or
continue it.
Reading: You can also use the A button to read signs. Just walk up to it and press A. Same rules for talking apply for
reading.
Opening: Chests often contain valuable items such as rings and ruppees. To open them, stand in front of one and press "A". Some chests contain new items that are needed to complete a dungeon.
